The Custom Label Builder in Creative Force allows studios to create, edit, and manage their own print label layouts instantly. The builder provides a visual editor with live data preview, barcode configuration, and printer testing.
Getting Started
To get started using the Custom Label Builder, head to Studio Settings → Printing → then Custom Labels on the side navigation menu.
In the Custom Label screen, you will have the option to edit, duplicate, or delete previously created custom labels.
To add a new custom label, select Add in the top right corner of the screen.
Label Builder
When opting to create a new label, you will be brought into a pop-up menu with a number of configuration options– this is the Customer Label Builder.
There are three distinct sections of the builder, each with specific functions.
Location | Section | Function |
Left | Configuration Panel | Define specific label attributes and select elements to add to the label. |
Center | Builder Preview | Shows a visual representation of all of the configuration options chosen in the other two panels. |
Right | Element Panel | Set configuration options that are specific to a chosen element. |
Configuration Panel
To the left-hand side of the screen is the Configuration Panel. In this area, you can define specific label attributes and select elements to add to the label.
Configuration Options
Configuration Option | Function |
Name | Click into the area below "custom label builder" in the top left corner to edit the name of the custom label. |
Label Type | Select between three Label Types:
To learn more about the different label types, see the section here. |
Label Size | The drop-down will contain a number of pre-defined label sizes. The chosen label size should correlate with the dimensions specified for your label printer and label paper. |
Width/Height | These are automatically filled in by millimeters when a pre-defined size is selected. |
Margins | Define in millimeters the amount of padding space bordering where the elements exist in relation to the label's edges. |
Add Elements | Select an element type to add to the label. See more on element types in the section here. |
Label Types
The type of label selected will change the available elements in the element section, as well as the non-custom options available in the Label Size section.
⚠️ Important: When switching between label types in the builder, any elements or configuration options applied so far will be reset.
Label Types | Description |
Sample | The most commonly used label type. These labels are typically associated with garments on a set. |
Container | Barcoded labels are assigned to containers (rails or boxes) that group multiple samples together for bulk management.
By scanning a container label, teams can efficiently perform actions on all samples within that container at once, such as changing the location of an entire rail of clothing or checking in a full box of Samples. |
Location | Location Labels represent physical locations within your studio (such as sets, wardrobe areas, stock rooms, or preparation zones).
When scanned, location labels enable quick sample placement by allowing teams to scan the location first, then scan individual samples or containers to instantly update their location in the system. |
Elements
Elements are unique groupings of data types that can be added to your custom label. When an element is selected, it will be added to the label preview for placement, and further customization of the element's related data will become available on the far-right element panel.
Element Types
The types of elements can be found in the table below, along with a description.
Element Type | Description |
Barcode | Adds a barcode to the label that can be scanned via the Chroma app or other scanning hardware. |
Static Text
| A field allowing custom text to be added to the label. The text is static and is not related to variable data.
This is useful for creating sections or other information that will not change based on the item scanned. |
Property Text | Adds a section for variable data to the label. The value shown at the time of print will change based on the item scanned. |
Production Types | Adds a section that will generate a list of Production Types related to the scanned Sample. |
Cover Image | Adds a section that will generate a thumbnail based on the Product or Sample Display Image. |
Spacer | Adds a section that acts as an empty space between other elements. Think of this as a line break between paragraphs. |
Element Panel
The Element Panel will appear on the far right-hand side when an element has been added to the label. In this section, you will be given configuration options that are specific to the chosen element.
When multiple elements are added to a label, select the element in the center of the preview panel to highlight it and bring up its associated element panel.
In the table below, we will outline common configuration options shared between multiple element types.
Element Option | Function |
Text Size
| Allows you to specify the text size as a point value associated with its scale to an inch.
See Point Scale Point Size | Fraction of an Inch | Millimeters
|
Bold & Align
| For elements containing text, it allows you to bolden the font, or align the text to the left edge, center, or right edge of the element. |
Description
| Sets a description to be associated with an element. Descriptions can be thought of as the header for a property value it's related to. |
Width/Height
| For the specified element, set a specific width or height for the element to scale as a percent of the total label span. Example: 25% = 3 of 12 grid boxes. |
Hide Property if Empty | Toggle On/Off. When enabled, the element will appear blank if the item the label is being printed for does not have an associated value for that property. |
Builder Preview
The center panel of the Custom Label Builder is the Build Preview. Here is where you will see a visual representation of all of the configuration options chosen in the other two panels.
There are a few actions that can be performed when interacting with the preview.
Zoom In + Out
Use your mouse's scroll wheel, your Magic Mouse's zoom gesture, or the scale bar in the bottom right to control the relative size of the preview.
You can also use the icon shown here to instantly reset the scale to 100%.
Arrange + Scale Elements
Click into the label and highlight elements to manually edit their placement and size. With an element selected and highlighted, drag and drop it anywhere inside the specified margins.
Additionally, in the bottom right of each element, select, pinch, and drag to adjust the relative size.
Hide/Show Grid
Use the button in the bottom left to toggle between Show Grid and Hide Grid. This will remove the grid line overlay running vertically across the label preview.
Test Print
Use the Print button in the bottom left to trigger a direct print as a test using the custom label as it is currently configured.
Select the drop-down to select or search for a specific code from your data– then choose to print via your machine's OS printer, or a configured network printer.
Save & Use Label
Once you have completed the configuration of your label, just hit Save in the top right corner of the Builder Preview.
Once saved, your custom label will appear as an available option in your Print Configurations. For more information on Print Configurations, see our dedicated article by following the link below.
