July 16th 2026 Incident Retrospective

This retrospective will provide an overview of the system outage that users experienced on July 16th 2026.

Written by Ian Mitchell

Summary

Between approximately 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM UTC on July 16, 2026, users experienced intermittent errors accessing Creative Force applications. The disruption was caused by an outage in Amazon Web Services' (AWS) CloudFront service affecting connectivity to VPC Origins.

AWS later confirmed the root cause was an internal capacity constraint in the systems responsible for routing traffic to customer VPC origins, which prevented routing configuration from being distributed correctly to their network processors.

Our team detected error rates through customer reports and independent monitoring shortly after 8:00 AM UTC. Development rerouted affected traffic through an alternate network path outside the impacted VPC Origin configuration, restoring service for our users by approximately 10:00 AM UTC. 78 minutes before AWS confirmed full recovery on their end at 11:18 AM UTC.

Follow Up

AWS has since published a full account of the incident, confirming the issue was isolated to customers using VPC Origins connectivity and that it has been fully resolved on their end.

On our side, we maintained the temporary routing workaround overnight to ensure continued stability before reverting to our standard configuration once AWS confirmed full recovery.

We're conducting an internal review of the workaround's performance to determine whether elements of it should be adopted more permanently, improving our resilience against similar third-party provider outages going forward.

We also continue to invest in monitoring that lets us detect this class of issue independently of upstream provider status pages, so we can respond even faster in the future.
